McAfee Stinger is a standalone utility used to detect and remove specific viruses. It is not a substitute for full anti-virus protection, but a specialized tool to assist administrators and users when dealing with infected system. Stinger utilizes next-generation scan technology, including rootkit scanning, and scan performance optimizations. It detects and removes threats identified under the "Threat List" option under Advanced menu options in the Stinger application.

Compared to their opponents, the feature set in their Total Protection suite is excellent. You can get not only anti-virus software, but also password storage, anti-spam and encryption software, all of which are built into one software package. McAfee seems to focus on preventing malicious attacks, not just dealing with problems when they happen, which is more important than other problems, and should give you a lot of confidence when using this stylish software suite.

Stinger is very basic. Add the path you want to scan, and then click the red scan now button. The program runs fast, and the results can be summarized in the interface window. By default, Stinger will repair any viruses it finds, and you can export the scan results under the "File" menu.

The Stinger configuration options are limited and quite advanced - you'll be able to specify what you want the program to do when it finds a virus, if you want to see a list of scanned files on the interface and an assortment of options relating to virus detection. Stinger is not a user-friendly program, but then again, it's not developed for your average user. If you are experienced, however, you'll find Stinger to be a helpful tool in your antivirus toolbox.
