Wireshark is software that "understands" the structure of different networking protocols. Thus, it is able to display the encapsulation and the fields along with their meanings of different packets specified by different networking protocols. Wireshark uses pcap to capture packets, so it can only capture the packets on the types of networks that pcap supports.
Wireshark is the most important and widely used network protocol analyzer in the world. It allows you to see what is happening on the Internet at a micro level, and is the de facto (and usually legal) standard for many commercial and non-profit enterprises, government agencies, and educational institutions. Thanks to the voluntary contributions of global network experts, Wireshark has flourished and is a continuation of the project started by Gerald Combs in 1998.
Key Features:
- In-depth inspection of hundreds of protocols, and more protocols are being added all the time
- Real-time capture and offline analysis
- Standard three-pane packet browser
- Multi-platform: runs on Windows, Linux, macOS, Solaris, FreeBSD, NetBSD and many other platforms
- The captured network data can be browsed through the GUI or through the TTY mode TShark utility
- The most powerful display filter in the industry
- Rich VoIP analysis
- Read/write many different capture file formats: tcpdump (libpcap), Pcap NG, Catapult DCT2000, Cisco Secure IDS iplog, Microsoft Network Monitor, Network General Sniffer® (compressed and uncompressed), Sniffer® Pro and NetXray®, Network Instruments Observer, NetScreen snoop, Novell LANalyzer, RADCOM WAN/LAN Analyzer, Shomiti/Finisar Surveyor, Tektronix K12xx, Visual Networks Visual UpTime, WildPackets EtherPeek/TokenPeek/AiroPeek, etc.
- Capture files compressed with gzip can be decompressed on the fly
- Real-time data can be read from Ethernet, IEEE 802.11, PPP/HDLC, ATM, Bluetooth, USB, token ring, frame relay, FDDI, etc. (depending on your platform)
- Decryption support for many protocols, including IPsec, ISAKMP, Kerberos, SNMPv3, SSL/TLS, WEP and WPA/WPA2
- Coloring rules can be applied to the packet list for fast and intuitive analysis
- Output can be exported as XML, PostScript®, CSV or plain text
