Use Document Recovery<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Office 2016 comes with\u00a0built-in features to help you recover your documents in the event that the software closes unexpectedly. This is the simplest\u00a0method of getting your work back, so attempt\u00a0this quick and easy procedure to see if it\u2019s successful before you try\u00a0any more complex methods.<\/p>\n

As you can see above, I\u2019ve foolishly clicked Don\u2019t Save while exiting Microsoft Word<\/span>, and I\u2019ve lost a considerable amount of work on my document as a result. Fortunately, the application will temporarily hold a copy of the file in case of this occurrence.<\/span><\/p>\n

To get it back, fire\u00a0up Word once again and open a document \u2014 an earlier version\u00a0<\/span>of the file in question is ideal, but any will do. If you don\u2019t see the document recovery pane as\u00a0shown\u00a0above, navigate to\u00a0<\/span>File<\/strong>\u00a0>\u00a0<\/span>Manage Document<\/strong>\u00a0>\u00a0<\/span>Recover Unsaved Documents<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

You\u2019ll be presented with a window displaying Office\u2019s UnsavedFiles folder. Any documents that the software managed to recover will be present as ASD files \u2014 automatic backups used by the Office suite. As you can see, they\u2019re unlabelled, so you\u2019ll have to use the date they were last modified or trial and error to determine whether or not your document was rescued.<\/span><\/p>\n

Reveal Temporary Files<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Documents that have been corrupted or deleted sometimes leave behind temporary versions that contain most, if not all, the content of the original. These temporary files are typically hidden from the user, but it\u2019s easy to uncover them once you know how.<\/p>\n

Type File Explorer Options \u00a0into the search bar\u00a0and open the corresponding Control Panel result. Switch to the\u00a0View<\/strong>\u00a0tab and find the\u00a0Hidden files and folders<\/strong>\u00a0radio toggle in the\u00a0Advanced settings<\/strong>\u00a0section.<\/p>\n

Change this toggle to\u00a0Show hidden files, folders and drives<\/strong>, as highlighted above. Now, head to the folder where your corrupted or deleted file was saved and look out for file names that begin with a tilde and end with a .tmp\u00a0extension.<\/p>\n

Once you\u2019ve found a file that matches your expectations in terms of file size and date modified, rename it and replace the extension\u00a0with .docx for versions of Word post 2007 or .doc for earlier iterations. Open it up and see whether it\u2019s the file you were looking for \u2014 and don\u2019t forget to go back and change the radio toggle toDon\u2019t show hidden files, folders of drives<\/strong>\u00a0once you\u2019re done.<\/p>\n

Check the Recycle Bin<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This may seem obvious, but it\u2019s easy to overlook in a panic. Unless you\u2019ve recently emptied it, your Recycle Bin\u00a0will contain all files that have recently been deleted. That includes documents you\u2019ve removed manually, as well as\u00a0temporary files like the ones detailed in the above section of this article, so make sure your\u00a0File Explorer Options<\/strong>\u00a0are set to\u00a0Show hidden files, folders and drives<\/strong>\u00a0when you check in.<\/p>\n

The Recycle Bin can be a real life-saver for users working with Microsoft\u2019s online services like OneDrive and Office 365. If you\u2019re using a personal account, deleted files can be recovered by heading to the Recycle Bin and using the\u00a0Restore<\/strong>function. However, if you\u2019re on an enterprise account, you\u2019ll likely have to speak to an administrator in order to have the files recovered.<\/p>\n

With these options enabled, you\u2019re giving yourself the best chance of having a backup of your work.<\/p>\n
