Whether it\u2019s the screen flashing, not being able to connect to the Internet, or the battery draining too quickly, it\u2019s time to resolve these annoying problems.<\/span><\/p>\n

Update Stuck Downloading or Won\u2019t Install<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Since\u00a0Windows 10<\/span>\u00a0 forces updates on you,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0it makes it even more frustrating when the Windows Update process doesn\u2019t go smoothly. If one of your updates is stuck during download or is refusing to install, it\u2019s likely that the file is corrupted. In that case,\u00a0it\u2019s necessary to flush out the update files and start from the top.<\/span><\/p>\n

To do so, press\u00a0<\/span>Windows Key + R<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>to open Run and input <\/span>C:\\Windows\\SoftwareDistribution\\Download\u00a0<\/strong>and click\u00a0<\/span>OK<\/strong>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Next, delete everything inside the folder, but don\u2019t delete the folder itself. You might need to boot into safe mood<\/span>\u00a0if some files won\u2019t delete. Once complete, restart your computer and attempt the update process again.<\/span><\/p>\n

Battery Draining Too Quickly<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Those of you on portable devices that upgraded to Windows 10 at launch may have found that the new operating system took a hefty toll on your battery life. Intel and Microsoft solved this together, so make sure your drivers are up-to-date\u00a0and you should find it resolved.<\/p>\n

If not, you might want to turn attention to some of Windows 10\u2019s new features. Though Cortana, the virtual assistant, can come in very handy, she does impact the battery slightly. If you want to reserve all the power you can, do a system search for\u00a0Cortana, select the relevant result, then switch\u00a0Let Cortana respond to Hey Cortana\u00a0<\/strong>to\u00a0Off<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Windows Update can also have a drain on your battery (and bandwidth), especially now that it can share updates you\u2019ve downloaded with others. To turn this off, press\u00a0Windows Key + I<\/strong>\u00a0and then navigate to\u00a0Update & security > Windows Update > Advanced options > Choose how updates are delivered\u00a0<\/strong>and move the switch to\u00a0Off<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Default App Choices Have Changed<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Did you upgrade to Windows 10 and find that your images weren\u2019t opening in your favorite app anymore? Or that your browser had defaulted to Microsoft Edge? For whatever reason, Windows 10 isn\u2019t good at remembering what programs you\u2019d chosen to open specific file types. Though it\u2019s a pain to reconfigure them all, it\u2019s easy to change your default apps.<\/p>\n

First, press\u00a0Windows Key + I\u00a0<\/strong>and select\u00a0System<\/strong>. Then, from the left-hand navigation, choose\u00a0Default apps<\/strong>. Here, you can change your default app for your photos, videos, and more.<\/p>\n

Wi-Fi Connection Not Discoverable<\/strong><\/h2>\n

If your system is no longer detecting your Wi-Fi connection, this is likely due to VPN\u00a0<\/span>software that you have installed. It can also impact some Ethernet connections. Your first port of call would be to go to your\u00a0<\/span>VPN<\/span>\u00a0software\u2019s website and update to the latest version, one compatible with Windows 10, as this might solve the issue.<\/span><\/p>\n

If this doesn\u2019t work, open an administrative Command Prompt by pressing<\/span>Windows Key + X\u00a0<\/strong>and selecting\u00a0<\/span>Command Prompt (Admin)<\/strong>. Then input the following two lines, pressing\u00a0<\/span>Enter\u00a0<\/strong>after each:<\/span><\/p>\n

If this doesn\u2019t work, the issue might be driver related, rather than VPN<\/span>. For this, system search\u00a0<\/span>device manager\u00a0<\/strong>and select the relevant result. In the new window, expand\u00a0<\/span>Network adapters<\/strong>. Then\u00a0<\/span>right-click<\/strong>\u00a0your wireless adapter and select<\/span>Update Driver Software\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n
Touchpad Not Working<\/strong><\/h2>\n
If your touchpad isn\u2019t working, let\u2019s start with some simple steps to see if it\u2019s actually enabled. First, check your keyboard to see if there\u2019s a function button that turns the touchpad off and on. This will vary depending on your device, but it\u2019ll usually be represented by an icon on one of the F# keys.<\/p>\n
If this doesn\u2019t work, press\u00a0Windows Key + I<\/strong>, select\u00a0Devices\u00a0>\u00a0Mouse & touchpad\u00a0>\u00a0Additional mouse options<\/strong>. A new window will open and from here you need to click the tab which is furthest to the right, likely called\u00a0Device Settings<\/strong>. Underneath\u00a0Devices<\/strong>, select your touchpad and ensure it\u2019s not disabled. If it is, then click the\u00a0Enable\u00a0<\/strong>button.<\/p>\n

Failing this, press\u00a0Windows Key + X<\/strong>\u00a0and select\u00a0Device Manager<\/strong>. Then expand\u00a0Mice and other pointing devices<\/strong>,\u00a0right-click\u00a0<\/strong>your touchpad and select\u00a0Update Driver Software\u2026<\/strong>\u00a0You could also navigate to the manufacturer\u2019s website and download your drivers that way instead.<\/p>\n
Can\u2019t Install or Update Store Apps<\/strong><\/h2>\n
If you\u2019re having trouble installing or updating apps within the Store, you might need to clear the cache. This is really easy to do.<\/p>\n

First, press\u00a0<\/span>Windows Key + R\u00a0<\/strong>to open Run. Input\u00a0<\/span>WSReset.exe\u00a0<\/strong>and click\u00a0<\/span>OK<\/strong>. A blank Command Prompt window will open, but don\u2019t worry, it is working away. Eventually it\u2019ll close and the Store will open, hopefully with your issues resolved.<\/span><\/p>\n
Microsoft Office Files Don\u2019t Open<\/strong><\/h2>\n
If you\u2019re trying to open Microsoft Office files and getting errors like \u201cfile is corrupt and cannot be opened\u201d, \u201cunable to start correctly\u201d, and \u201cexperience an error trying to open the file\u201d, it might be due to problems with the Protected View feature.<\/p>\n

To overcome this, press\u00a0CTRL\u00a0+ X\u00a0<\/strong>and then select\u00a0Command Prompt (Admin)<\/strong>. Input the following command, but replace the Office number with whatever version you\u2019re using, and then hit\u00a0ENTER<\/strong>\u00a0on your keyboard:<\/p>\n

You should now be able to open your Office files. If not, try repairing the installation. For this, do a system search for\u00a0<\/span>programs and features\u00a0<\/strong>and select the relevant result. Find Office in the list,\u00a0<\/span>right-click\u00a0<\/strong>it and then press\u00a0<\/span>Change<\/strong>. Select\u00a0<\/span>Online Repair\u00a0<\/strong>and then click\u00a0<\/span>Repair<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n
Flickering or Flashing Screen<\/strong><\/h2>\n
If your screen is flickering or flashing when it didn\u2019t before, it\u2019s likely due to an incompatible application or driver. Norton\u00a0AntiVirus, iCloud, and IDT Audio are all programs that are known to cause this problem. Update them and see if it fixes the problem, else you might need to uninstall then reinstall. On Norton\u2019s part, they have an official support page\u00a0\u00a0to help.<\/p>\n
