Private browsing mode doesn\u2019t offer complete privacy, but it does prevent your browser from saving your history, searches, cookies, and other private data between browsing sessions. You can have your browser always start in private browsing mode if you prefer it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Google Chrome<\/a><\/h2>\n

To activate Google Chrome\u2019s incognito mode by default, you must add a command line option to its shortcut.<\/p>\n

First, locate the shortcut you use to launch Google Chrome\u2014either on your taskbar, desktop, Start menu. Right-click it and select \u201cProperties\u201d.\u00a0If you\u2019re using a taskbar shortcut, you\u2019ll have to right-click the Google Chrome shortcut on your taskbar, right-click \u201cGoogle Chrome\u201d in the menu that appears, and then select \u201cProperties\u201d.<\/p>\n

Add\u00a0-incognito<\/code>\u00a0to the end of the text in the Target box. That\u2019s a space, one dash, and then the word incognito.\u00a0Click \u201cOK\u201d to save your changes after adding this option.<\/span><\/p>\n

Google Chrome will now start in incognito mode when you launch it\u00a0from\u00a0this shortcut. If you use other shortcuts to launch Google Chrome, you will\u00a0also need to modify them.\u00a0To undo this change in the future, edit your shortcuts and remove the\u00a0-incognito<\/code>\u00a0text you added.<\/p>\n

Mozilla Firefox<\/a><\/h2>\n

Firefox allows you to automatically enable private browsing mode via its options window. Click menu > Options to open it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Click the \u201cPrivacy\u201d\u00a0tab at the left side of the window to access your privacy settings. Under History, click the \u201cFirefox will\u201d box and select \u201cNever remember history\u201d. You\u2019ll be prompted to restart Firefox.<\/span><\/p>\n

Firefox will now always use the same settings it uses in private browsing mode, although it won\u2019t display its normal private browsing interface. It will just look like a normal Firefox browser window.<\/span><\/p>\n
